Alachua County Library District celebrates 2020 National Library Card Sign-Up Month with limited-quantity poster

Gainesville, Fla. – The Alachua County Library District is chomping into National Library Card Sign-Up Month this September with a special poster for new cardholders, available while supplies last. The illustrated poster features an alligator encircling the word “Read.” New patrons can sign up for a library card using curbside service 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday at all 12 library branches. Library cards are free and available to any Florida resident.

“Having a library card is more important than ever. A library card gives you access to our collection of 800,000-plus physical items, including books, DVDs, and CDs, and more than 86,000 digital books and audiobooks,” said Library Director Shaney Livingston. “Library cardholders can use our eSources to do everything from genealogical research to learning to code. An Alachua County Library District card is your free ticket to endless education and entertainment options for all ages.”

Florida residents ages 18 and older can register at any branch with photo identification and proof of residency. Minors ages 4-17 can register with assistance from a legal guardian.

Any current photo ID with Florida address works for registration. If the photo ID does not have the current Florida address, residency can be verified with:

  • Voter registration card
  • Rent or utility receipt
  • Personal checkbook with imprinted name and address
  • Property tax notice
  • Name and address on mail with canceled postage, including forwarded mail
  • Telephone listing in current telephone directory

To sign up a child for a library card, a parent or legal guardian should bring their own photo ID plus a form of ID for the child. Acceptable identification for a minor:

  • School report card
  • School immunization record
  • Health insurance card
  • Social Security card
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
