Gainesville, Fla. — Join The Lynx, the Alachua County Library District, and our partnering community organizations throughout September for a series of art events, educational lectures, book club meetings, and more. Events will take place throughout Gainesville with topics centering around "The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet" by Jeff Goodell.

HEAT Exhibition Reception
Aug. 30, 7-10 p.m. at the Gainesville Fine Arts Association 

  • An evening of art and conversation featuring author Jeff Goodell.
     

Climate Change and Mental Health with Barbara Drake-Vera and Brittany Rivers 
Sept. 2, 6-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • A discussion on climate change and emotional well-being. 


Community Weatherization Coalition Presentation 
Sept. 3, 5-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • Learn more about your home energy usage, how to volunteer, and request a free in-home tune-up session. 


STEAM Crafts - Climate Change
Sept. 5, 4-5 p.m. at Headquarters Library 

  • Join us in the Storywoods Room this fall for STEAM Crafts! Every other Thursday we’ll have new science and art projects inspired by seasonal themes. Age Group: Elementary (6-11 years) 


Creation Justice Committee of UCG Book Discussion
Sept. 9, 6-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • Join the Creation Justice Committee of UCG for a discussion of Jeff Goodell's book, The Heat Will Kill You First" 


Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Rachel Carson with Betty Jean Steinshouer 
Sept. 12, 6-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • Join us for an evening with Betty Jean Steinshouer! We will discuss the works of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Rachel Carson as vital pieces of environmental activism in conversation with climate change.


Florida Talks: Exploring the Protection of Florida's Fluid Landscapes presented by Dr. Victoria Machado 
Sept. 13, 6-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • Join us for an evening presentation by Dr. Victoria Machado. We will be discussing climate change in conversation with Florida's water systems.

Florida Talks: Florida and Water: A Historical Perspective presented by Dr. Steve Noll 
Sept. 16, 6-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • Join in discussing Florida's climate history of water and human involvement with speaker Dr. Steve Noll. 
     

Alachua Conservation Trust Book Club Meeting 
Sept. 17, 6-7:30 p.m. at 1225 NW Fourth Street, Gainesville 

  • The first of two book club meetings discussing The Heat Will Kill You First. 
     

Story Time at the Zoo - Climate Change 
Sept. 18, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo 

  • Join us at Santa Fe College Zoo on the third Wednesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. for stories about all kinds of animals and other friendly creatures. We'll read stories about snakes, monkeys, tigers, emus, and peacocks just to name a few! The story time will be held in front of the zoo on the front lawn, so it is free and accessible to all. Parking is free, too.
     

Climate Knitting & Documentary Showing
Sept. 19, 4-6 p.m. at Headquarters Library 

  • Learn some basic knitting and/or crochet skills to fashion a temperature scarf, then work on your new project while we watch a documentary on climate change.
     

Florida Talks: The Sound of the Sea presented by Cynthia Barnett
Sept. 20, 6-7 p.m. at The Lynx 

  • Pick up a seashell and listen to what mollusks and other marine animals are telling us about our warming, stormy seas! Join us for an evening presentation with Cynthia Barnett as we discuss oceans and climate change.

  • The second of two book club meetings discussing The Heat Will Kill You First. 
     

Preschool Storytime Special - Climate Change 
Sept. 25, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Headquarters Library 

  • Read, laugh, and sing with us for Preschool Story Time and spend time crafting with family and friends. 

    Join us for stories and a fun-filled activity to take home. Wear grubby clothing as we plan to get a little messy with our craft. The crafting project is simple. Parents/guardians are welcome to assist their children with this project. Supplies are limited.
     

GFAA Reception and Artwalk 
Sept. 27, 7-10 p.m. at Gainesville Fine Arts Association Gallery 

  • Head to the Gainesville Fine Arts Association for an evening of art, community, and conversation! The evening will include Gainesville ArtWalk programming, garden demonstration and planting, tabling community organizations from around Gainesville, and even a tree giveaway!
     

Jeff Goodell and Jane Gilbert on The Heat Will Kill You First 
Sept. 28, 3-5 p.m. at Headquarters Library 

  • Join us for our capstone Gainesville Reads event! Author Jeff Goodell will join us for a conversation with Miami's Chief Heat Officer, Jane Gilbert. 

    Join us at the GFAA Gallery for an afterparty following the event to enjoy art, conversation, and community connection. Hors d'oeuvres provided.
