Movie Talk: Women's History Month

Welcome to Movie Talk blog, where staff offer movie recommendations!  For March we would like to highlight Women's History month.  The following recommendations will feature movies that are an inspiration to young women, movies that star an award winning actress, movies of historical importance, and movies starring actresses we can't help being avid fans of.  This is in no way a complete list of what we have to offer so be sure to check our catalog for more suggestions!

The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman

Reviewed by: Fiona, Library Specialist

Hi, I’m Fiona at Library Headquarters, and I recommend The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. This 1974 TV movie featured Cicely Tyson who won two Emmy awards for her performance, including Best Actress. The film was based on the novel by Ernest Gaines. From her memories of the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, this is the story of Jane Pittman, a 110 year old former slave.  For Women’s History Month, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

A Dry White Season

Reviewed by: Cameron, Librarian

Hi, my name is Cameron from the Cone Park Branch. I’d like to recommend A Dry White Season by Euzhan Palcy. This movie is historically important because it was the first movie produced by a Hollywood studio to be directed by a Black woman. A Dry White Season tells the story of two families, one black and one white, and their disintegration under South Africa’s apartheid regime. The movie can be difficult to watch, but its message about the terrible cost of racism and unequal treatment under the law still resonates today.

Nine to Five

Reviewed by: Assh, Librarian

For Women's History Month, I'd like to talk to you about one of my favorite films of all time Nine to Five, which stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton. Back in the 80s when women were getting a foot in the door, in office work, these three women struggled underneath one of the most tyrannical, misogynistic, rude, egotistical jerks of all time. And just like us, they wanted their revenge. If you're interested in watching three women strong arm their jerk of a boss and get theirs, this is absolutely the film for you. It also has some of the greatest songs I've ever heard and if you've never bop out to Nine to Five, you don't know what you're missing.

Wonder Woman

Reviewed by: Rachelle, Librarian

Hi, I’m Rachelle from the Tower Road Branch library. When I was a little girl, I can remember watching Linda Carter on the television twirl and twirl until BAM! She was Wonder Woman. For Women’s History Month, I’m recommending the movie Wonder Woman. This movie features Gal Gadot who won the Teen Choice Award for her performance as the title character. And I think she did the original TV show and the Comics they were based on proud.
