Unexpected Christmas movies

Tis the season for good cheer, good music, good food, and good company. But don’t forget a good movie!

Sure there are many Christmas movies out there you’d expect, things considered classics. A Christmas Story, It’s a wonderful life, and Miracle on 34th Street (both the 1947 original and the 1994 remake) pop in my head immediately. But this year, why not try something more unexpected?!

Maybe you need something to transition you into the unexpected. Here are a couple of titles that are far from classics but would still be considered a more traditional Christmas movie.

 This dark comedy stars Billy Bob Thornton as a con man and thief who teams up with his best friend for a very special scam each holiday season. They get jobs as Santa and his little helper at malls and then rob the stores blind.

 Will Ferrell stars as Buddy, a man raised as an elf by Santa Claus. Buddy finds out where he came from and goes on a search for his biological family.

 The Griswald family is back in this sequal to National Lampoon's Vacation. This time it's Christmas and the family is planning to host Christmas dinner, but as all the Griswald's plans go, it quickly turns into a disaster!

 

A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas (2011)

 In this sequel to the first Batman movie, staring Michael Keaton, the caped crusader goes up agianst the likes of The Penguin (Danny Devito), Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), and evil businessman Max Schreck (Christopher Walken). If you haven't seen the first Batman movie with Michael Keaton, fear not! We own the double feature!

Die Hard (1988)

Some still argue about whether or not this film is Christmas film.  You can be the judge. John McClane, a NY Cop played by Bruce Willis, has come to LA to visit his estranged wife for Christmas. Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman, throws a wrench in McClane's plans when he holds a group of partygoers hostage, including McClane's wife.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

 This is Tim Burton's take on Frankenstein, with Johnny Depp playing a synthetic young man named Edward with scissors for fingers. He is taken in by the Avon lady and ends up falling in love with her daughter, played by Winona Ryder.
