Join us in helping to spread awareness of the actions each of us can take to prevent suicide during National Suicide Prevention Month.
Suicide affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Family members and friends of those lost to suicide are also deeply affected and often find themselves struggling to make sense of their loss.
As always, please seek out the appropriate medical assistance by reaching out to an organization listed below or calling 911 in the case of a serious emergency.
Some warning signs include:
- Withdrawing from family or friends or loss of social support system
- Extreme mood swings
- Increased substance abuse
- Reckless behaviors
- Saying goodbye to loved ones
- Giving away possessions
- Paying debts or organizing paperwork
- Talking about being a burden, feeling trapped, or wanting revenge
- Talking about wanting to die
- Purchasing a weapon or other means of causing self harm
What are some ways each of us can make a difference if we suspect another person may be experiencing suicidal thoughts:
- Listen and allow others to express emotions
- Have an open dialog about suicide
- Be involved with others and follow up to check in with them
- Ask simple and direct questions
- Remove easy access to weapons or harmful materials
- Express support and concern and avoid judgment and shock
- Don't try to argue or debate
- Help the other person find and access support
