After a two-year hiatus, we are excited to welcome volunteers in-person again starting May 9 for a slow and safe return.

Help Wanted

Our smaller, community branches, including the Cone Park, Micanopy and Waldo branches, typically do not have as many volunteer applicants. Currently, these locations have no waitlist or a very short waitlist. We would love to have your help at these great locations.

The Literacy Program also needs more volunteers at branches outside Gainesville. These volunteers focus on one-on-one language and literacy tutoring. The ACLD Literacy Program trains volunteers to serve struggling readers and non-readers in our community. Approximately 11% of adults in Alachua County struggle with reading or do not have basic English-speaking skills, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Volunteer tutors are vital to the success of those who struggle with reading in our community.

To help meet these needs, please apply on our volunteer website.

Types of Volunteers

In addition to the literacy and language tutors, volunteers can help in many ways. Volunteers can assist with checking in and re-shelving library materials, book repair, program and special event assistance, Seed Library maintenance, and more.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering provides great experience for resumes and college applications as well as college admissions and scholarships. Volunteers meet and interact with others who share a passion for volunteering, personal fulfillment, and growth. You will get hands-on experience giving back to your community by helping staff at the libraries complete their tasks while creating a positive experience for both staff and the public.

How to Apply

To volunteer, you must be at least 12 years old and able to volunteer a minimum of 2-4 hours a week for at least 3-6 months. You must submit a Volunteer Interest Form based on your age group: Youth (aged 12-17) or Adult, and have two people not related to you submit reference forms on your behalf. If there are spaces available at your preferred branch, the Volunteer Program Office will contact you.
