[What is Equality Florida?]
Equality Florida consists of two organizations - Equality Florida Institute, the educational charity, and Equality Florida Action, the advocacy organization. Together with over 300,000 supporters, these two groups form the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida's LGBTQ community. Pretty impressive!
Equality Florida has advocated for pro-LGBTQ legislation and against any anti-LGBTQ legislation filed in Tallahassee since the organization was started. They played a key role in overturning Florida's ban on gay and lesbian adoption in 2015 and 2016. The National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality Florida combined in 2008 to file a lawsuit against Florida's same-sex marriage ban, which was finally lifted in January of 2015.
In 2014, Equality Florida's Transgender Inclusion Initiative, known as TransAction Florida, was created. TransAction provides workshops for major Florida employers such as media outlets, law enforcement, health care, and the faith community. It also engages with public policy issues to advocate for fully-inclusive statewide human rights.
The #HonorThemWithAction Campaign was coordinated by Equality Florida and the National Equality Action Team (NEAT) following the June 12, 2016 Pulse Nightclub Massacre. #HonorThemWithAction began as a way for individuals to share on social media how they were honoring the victims, survivors and families of Pulse by taking actions in their community to combat discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ and Latinx people. Since then, thousands of people have taken action.
