Movie Talk: Best of 2019 & 2020

Welcome everyone!  Thanks for tuning in to our Movie Talk suggestions.  This time I would like to feature recent movies and documentaries you might have missed.  A best of 2019 and 2020 so to speak. For more suggestions check out our catalog.  Without further ado, let's get to some suggestions!

Parasite

Reviewed by: Jessica, Library Specialist

Parasite was the first non-English film and first South Korean film to win best picture at the Academy Awards and when you watch it, you can understand why. Characters are well developed, scenes are beautifully crafted and framed, but it is the story that unfolds is what really draws you in. While Parasite has plenty of dark humor sprinkled throughout, there are plenty of tense moments as you witness the Kim family attempt to infiltrate the Parks’ household. This black comedy crime thriller has a bit of everything and though Director Bong Joon Ho has created stories with similar themes, if you only watch one of his movies, I recommend Parasite. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can borrow it from the Alachua County Library District and decide if you think it was Oscar worthy.

Check out this informative documentary that recounts the history of the He-Man Mattel empire from its humble begins through its legendary heights and relive the nostalgia of your youth!

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am

Reviewed by: Fiona, Library Specialist

One of the best documentaries from 2019 was Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am which features Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison reflecting on her childhood, college, work, and even a book tour with Muhammad Ali.  Interviews with Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, and Oprah Winfrey describe their friendships with Morrison. Discussions of her books The Bluest Eye, Sula, and Song of Solomon among others, explore race, America, history, and the human experience.
