Larry McMurtry prolific author of more than 30 novels, books of essays, and memoir, died Thursday, March 25, at the age of 84 in his home, in Archer City, Texas. Besides novels and essays, he also wrote more than 20 screenplays. McMurtry was best known for his Oscar-winning screenplays Terms of Endearment and Brokeback Mountain, and his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Lonesome Dove, that was made into a successful television mini-series.

"Because of when and where I grew up, on the Great Plains just as the herding tradition was beginning to lose its vitality", he once said, "I have been interested all my life in vanishing breeds."

The late Don Graham, a professor of English and American literature at the University of Texas in Austin, called McMurtry, "pre-eminently a storyteller", in a 2014 interview with the AP: "He's a great creator of characters and dialogue. That's one of the reasons he's so successful in Hollywood."
