July is National Anti-Boredom Month

National Anti-boredom Month

You’re sitting on the couch, or maybe even in bed. You’ve been doom scrolling through social media for…well, you’re not sure how long. The last twelve videos on your FYP have all used the same increasingly annoying sound. You tried Twitter, but saw a post about a BTS guy being the reincarnation of Princess Diana and decided that it just wasn’t worth it. You’re really not in the mood to see what people you knew briefly from a class several years ago are up to now, so Instagram is out, and Tumblr is, well, Tumblr. You even clicked your phone off a couple times in preparation to get up and do something else, but you’ve gone back to it each time when your mind turns up blank. You’re tired of your phone, but you were also tired of it four hours ago, and yet there’s nothing else you can think of to do.  Nothing sounds appealing.  In short, you’re bored.

Lucky for you, July is National Anti-Boredom Month, and we’ve compiled a list of (nearly) every exciting thing you could possibly do to fill your time and maybe even bring about a little bit of joy.

Book titled "How to Start Writing (and When to Stop): Advice for Writers"

How to Start Writing (and When to Stop): Advice for Authors by Wislawa Szymborska

In this witty “how-to” guide, Wislawa Szymborska has nothing but sympathy for the labors of would-be writers generally: “I myself started out with rotten poetry and stories,” she confesses in this collection of pieces culled from the advice she gave—anonymously—for many years in the well-known Polish journal Literary Life.

She returns time and again to the mundane business of writing poetry properly, that is to say, painstakingly and sparingly. “I sigh to be a poet,” Miss A. P. from Bialogard exclaims. “I groan to be an editor,” Szymborska responds.

Szymborska stubbornly insists on poetry’s “prosaic side”: “Let’s take the wings off and try writing on foot, shall we?” This delightful compilation, translated by the peerless Clare Cavanagh, will delight readers and writers alike.

Book titled "Korean American: Food that Tastes Like Home"

Korean American: Food that Tastes Like Home by Eric Kim

An homage to what it means to be Korean American with delectable recipes that explore how new culinary traditions can be forged to honor both your past and your present.

New York Times staff writer Eric Kim grew up in Atlanta, the son of two Korean immigrants. Food has always been central to his story, from Friday-night Korean barbecue with his family to hybridized Korean-ish meals for one--like Gochujang-Buttered Radish Toast and Caramelized-Kimchi Baked Potatoes--that he makes in his tiny New York City apartment. In his debut cookbook, Eric shares these recipes alongside insightful, touching stories and stunning images shot by photographer Jenny Huang.

Playful, poignant, and vulnerable, Korean American also includes essays on subjects ranging from the life-changing act of leaving home and returning as an adult, to what Thanksgiving means to a first-generation family, complete with a full holiday menu--all the while teaching readers about the Korean pantry, the history of Korean cooking in America, and the importance of white rice in Korean cuisine. Recipes like Gochugaru Shrimp and Grits, Salt-and-Pepper Pork Chops with Vinegared Scallions, and Smashed Potatoes with Roasted-Seaweed Sour Cream Dip demonstrate Eric's prowess at introducing Korean pantry essentials to comforting American classics, while dishes such as Cheeseburger Kimbap and Crispy Lemon-Pepper Bulgogi with Quick-Pickled Shallots do the opposite by tinging traditional Korean favorites with beloved American flavor profiles. Baked goods like Milk Bread with Maple Syrup and Gochujang Chocolate Lava Cakes close out the narrative on a sweet note.

In this book of recipes and thoughtful insights, especially about his mother, Jean, Eric divulges not only what it means to be Korean American but how, through food and cooking, he found acceptance, strength, and the confidence to own his story.
