National Video Game Day happens on July 8! (Its cousin, National Video Games Day, is Sept. 12.) The best thing about video games is there's something for everyone. Whether you want to enjoy the classics or play something new, you can enjoy this celebration in your own way. The go-to tradition of this day is to immerse yourself in video games, which can be done solo or through cooperative play with friends.
The first commercial home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, was released in 1972 in North America. This and the Atari 2600 video game console paved the way for the era of iconic games such as Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, and Super Mario Bros. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) released in 1985 and cost $149.99. The console came complete with Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, a light gun accessory for Duck Hunt and an extra controller.
