Health and Wellness

With the New Year upon us, it’s time to look and see what you can do to start fresh and work on the new you. Focusing on health and wellness during a pandemic can be overwhelming, but the start of the year can be a great time to work on skills and habits that will improve your life in small ways that will help both your mental health and your physical health. Let’s get started!

  1. Drink more water. Hydration is a key point in your journey to wellness, and one of the easiest habits you can start is drinking more. According to the Mayo Clinic, women should aim to drink 11.5 cups and men should aim to drink 15.5 cups of water. You can make it more interesting by adding fruit and making a delicious infusion. Check out Fruit Infused Water by Susan Marque for ideas on ways to make achieving your water consumption more fun.
  2. Get moving! Adding a walk to your day on your lunch break can help you achieve your step goal. According to Harvard, walking is a great, low-intensity exercise that can lead to better heart health and mental health, as well as a slew of other benefits. A great way to pass the time during these walks is to check out our Overdrive eAudiobook collection so that you can meet your GoodReads goal too!
  3. Work up a sweat. According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, adults should aim for least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. Don’t know where to start? Check out our fitness DVD collection that can get you started on learning new cardio exercises.
  4. Eat more vegetables. The American Heart Association recommends eating a variety of fruit and vegetables, aiming for five servings of vegetables per day. You can check out some great vegetable dishes from some of our cookbook collection and decide what recipes work best for you and your lifestyle.
  5. Focus on mindfulness. The American Psychological Association touts mindfulness or the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing as helpful for the reduction of stress, boosting working memory, and focus. You can try to achieve this state through concentration or meditation, and you can check out our material on the subject to help you on your journey.
