Donut Day!

Donuts make the world go round! Fried dough creations were first recorded in the Roman era, but have been long-standing food staples in many parts of the planet. Churros provided some inspiration, but the donut in its final form was derived from the Dutch olykoek (oily cake). It was adopted by English and American households, and the Atlantic sea trade turned it into what we know today; in 1847, Hanson Gregory, a sailor, created the iconic hole in the donuts so that they'd cook more evenly.

Today, donuts come in many shapes, sizes, and flavors. There's crullers, twists, Long Johns, donut holes, and so much more. Donuts are versatile and universally beloved, which is why we have a National Donut Day twice a year--once on June 7th, and again on November 5th!
