What are the phases of the Moon?
According to NASA, the moon reflects light from the sun and orbits the Earth. What we are able to see of the reflected light changes throughout the moon's rotation around the earth. For example, when sunlight reflects off the far side of the moon (the side we cannot see from Earth), it is called a new moon. However, when light is reflected from the near side (the side we see from Earth), it is called a full moon. Throughout the rest of the month, we see portions of the reflected light relative to the position of the Earth, Moon and Sun. The phases of the moon are the new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. This cycle repeats every 29.5 days.
