The Randolph Caldecott Medal is given in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott to celebrate the year's most distinguished American children's picture book. To be eligible for a Caldecott, the book must be in English, first published in the United States, and be illustrated by an American artist. It was first awarded in 1938.
