August is Artist Appreciation Month. Whether you want to learn about artists, see local art, or try to learn a new skill, we have you covered. The Alachua County Library District has happily supported and promoted local artists through art shows, putting art in our branches, and even commissioning a local artist to create paintings of our branches. We always get compliments on our library cards, but did you know that a local artist, Ken Small, painted the then-new Headquarters Library in 1992?
A former University of Florida employee, he was a member of the Gainesville Artisans Guild and a well-known artist in Gainesville. His original image is still used on our cards, website, and all sorts of library materials. The library offers many opportunities and resources to experience art. We have art programs for all ages across the Library District. You can check out what is being offered by going to our online Events calendar.
Here are some great resources for finding art to enjoy or if you're an artist yourself:
The Alachua County Arts Council is a great resource for artists and art admirers. They provide resources for artists, promote art and initiatives throughout the county, and will even help apply for grants.
The Gainesville Fine Arts Association has been around for 100 years. Check out their website for upcoming exhibits and resources.
One of the oldest artist-owned and operated cooperatives in the county, the Gainesville Artisans Guild has been around for over 50 years and includes artists who practice painting, woodworking, and even glass. You can find events, local artists, and hours to visit their gallery on their website.
You can participate in the Art Walk on the last Friday of the month, Aug. 26 from 7-10 p.m. Held in Downtown Gainesville, the Art Walk is a self-guided tour through participating venues and galleries where you can experience local art, performances, and events.
Ever wonder who painted all the wonderful murals you see throughout Gainesville? Take the self-guided WallsWalk and learn about all the murals and the artists who created them.
We also have resources if you're ready to learn a new artistic skill. With your library card, you can access the CreativeBug database, an all-in-one source for learning a variety of craft techniques, including sewing, yarn crafts, paper crafts, jewelry making, and culinary arts.

Art Lab for Kids--Express Yourself! : 52 Creative Adventures to Find Your Voice Through Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media & Sculpture
by
"One of the most important gifts we can give children is to nurture their creativity and allow them to express themselves freely. There's no better way to express yourself than through creative art projects. This is especially true for children because it gives them an outlet to explore their developing interests and strengths. Art Lab for Kids: Express Yourself contains 52 brand-new original art projects that will draw out each young artist as they discover their style, document their thoughts, and build confidence in their unique perspective. Each lesson asks questions and offers personal choices while encouraging diverse approaches and creative thinking. The Colorful Beasts project, which incorporates discussion of endangered animals with the Blue Rider art movement, asks children to use torn colored tissue paper and glue to create an expressive representation of a favorite vulnerable animal. In I Built This City, children imagine and build their own cityscape using columns of newspaper text to make buildings on top of a watercolor painted background, and detailed with marker. Many projects include varying examples and executions of the activity to illustrate and reinforce the open-ended nature of the labs, inspiring children to embrace and share their own voice."

"A unique system for jump-starting artistic creativity, encouraging experimentation and growth, and increasing sales for artists of all levels, from novices to professionals. Too many artists find themselves in a frustrating rut: unable to sell paintings hanging in galleries, bogged down by projects they can't finish or abandon, and using any excuse to avoid working in the studio. Author Carol Marine was herself suffering from painter's block--until she discovered "daily painting." The idea is simple: do art (usually small) often (how often is up to the individual) and, if you desire, post it and sell it online. Today Marine is among the best and most celebrated daily painters and the curator of the popular online gallery dailypaintworks.com. In her debut, Daily Painting, Marine reveals the tips and tricks that helped her and other daily painters pick up the paintbrush and start creating beautiful, bountiful, marketable work."
