Apps for a Better World

Applications for smart devices can frustrate, entertain, inform, waste time, connect, disconnect--apps can do basically anything. It can be hard, then, to find apps that are interesting, educational, or informative in a way that feels like it's actually adding value to one's life.

To help our patrons find apps that enhance their world, we've compiled this list of value-adding apps. Some of these apps are connected to the library--we'll make it clear which those are. Others come from other organizations or companies, so as always, use caution and skepticism when navigating online spaces.

Creativebug

Creativebug is your place for all things crafty. Through the Alachua County Library District, you have a free membership with Creativebug. Take lessons on how to sew a shirt, creative mindfulness, colorful cards, watercolor painting, baby toys, and more. You can even search by craft supplies, so if you have, say, a lot of extra yarn, you can look at all the Creativebug classes that use yarn by simply searching "yarn."

The FBI National Stolen Art File and Interpol's ID-Art

These are actually two different apps with the same purpose--to help identify and repatriate stolen art and cultural works. Both of these apps include an extensive database of artwork and cultural works currently considered "at large." ID-Art has an AI-powered art-identification feature that allows you to check in real time if an art piece is stolen.

Google Arts & Culture

Also an arts-driven app, this one has a slightly broader purpose--to bring art into your phone, and into your home. Use this app to browse national and international museums and works of art--Google has some of the highest-quality scans of famous art ever made, so you can zoom in to really see the brushstrokes on Van Gogh's Starry Night, if that's your thing. This app also has some fun modes--import a picture of you or your pet and find your art lookalikes, use filters to transform yourself into art, or play art-based games for all ages.
