ACT UP was formed in March 1987 at the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in New York City. It has grown far beyond just New York though, with chapters in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Rhode Island, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and even internationally. These groups are dedicated to meeting with government officials, distributing the latest medical information, and protesting and demonstrating.
The ACT UP Oral History Project is an archive of 187 interviews with members of ACT UP. As stated on their website, the purpose of the project is to disseminate information as widely as possible, to foster study, research and discussion of ACT UP’s legacy in order to promote greater civic engagement based on that legacy.
