[What is PFLAG? Or: Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays]

On June 25th, 1972, during the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade, Jeanne Manford carried a hand-lettered sign that read "Parents of gays: unite in support of our children". She received such overwhelming support, that the idea for an organization was developed. The first meeting of what would come to be known as PFLAG took place on March 11, 1973.

PFLAG was one of the first organizations to take concerns to Congress and state legislators, advocating for gay civil rights and lobbying against discriminating practices.
In 1993, the organization updated its vision to include bisexuals, and did so again in 1998 to include transgender individuals.
To this day, PFLAG is the United States' first and largest organization uniting parents, families, and allies with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer.
Prior to COVID-19, the Gainesville chapter of PFLAG met regularly, including at ACLD branches on occasion! Visit their website for local updates and events, or follow them on Facebook.
