Jean Craighead George was the author of many books for children. She was nature lover and was born into a family of naturalists. Her love of the natural world and wildlife was evident in her books. She won the Newbery Honor Award for her book, My Side of the Mountain. To complement this book she also wrote On the Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain. She won the Newbery Medal, the highest honor in children's literature, and was a runner up for the National Book Award for her book Julie of the Wolves. This book is about an Eskimo girl who runs to the wild tundra of Alaska and is helped in her survival by a band of wolves.
